Birmingham City Council continues to break their promises to Ladywood residents

The homes of 2,000 Ladywood Residents are at risk of being demolished under a compulsory purchase order.

We have been locked out of a key meeting and denied information about what will happen to us. Our questions are sensible. After our homes are demolished, will we be able to live in comparable properties – like for like? Will we have to pay more to continue to live in our community? Will our vulnerable residents, including the elderly and disabled, be able to live in properties that accommodate them?

We have requested a meeting with our local MP Shabana Mahmood multiple times and she has never provided this. See here and here. It is unclear why she refuses to meet with us. We can only assume we are no longer her priority because she believes she can be elected again without our support.

Last week some of us received emails telling us that the resident FAQs have now been developed but nobody has received them. Previously we were informed these were expected at the end of last month (August). Nobody has written to us to clarify when we will receive them, simply that they exist.

We were promised engagement events this month – in September 2023. We are now well into September and nobody has provided us with any details of these events, and we have no idea if they will occur this month as planned. Many of us would now struggle to attend because we have other commitments that would need to be re-arranged in advance.

We are told by council staff to ‘please email LadywoodRegeneration@birmingham.gov.uk‘ but this email addresses has never responded to any of our questions about what will happen to us.

Birmingham City Council filing for bankruptcy seems consistent with them taking steps to provide our community land to luxury developers. They can’t afford to take care of us – so it appears they are letting the private sector in to bail them out at our expense.

Support us. Join our next protest on 12th September and sign our petitions.

Please confirm meeting time for 12th September – according to the calendar the council meet at 14.00 hours – should we really arrive at 11.30?

Yes we should – it will give us time to catch the Councillors before they go in. 11:30-12 arrival, local residents will speak from 12-2, go into meeting at 2. Thanks!
